1. Evaluation of residues of β-lactam, sulfonamide, tetracycline, quinolone, fluoroquinolone e pyrimidine in raw milk
Abstract Food quality and safety have been a concern of the world population, especially in relation to the chemical and microbiological hazards present in food. The presence of antimicrobial residues at levels above the maximum residue limit makes milk unsuitable for human consumption. In this context, the objective of this study was to analyze 184 raw milk

2. Antimicrobial use for treatment of healthcare-associated infections and bacterial resistance in a reference neonatal unit
Abstract Objective The use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials, such as third and fourth-generation, are responsible for emergence of multidrug-resistant microorganisms in neonatal units. Furthermore, antimicrobial daily doses are not standardized in neonatology. This study aimed to investigate the association between the use of antimicrobial broad spectrum to

3. Probiotic characterization of a commercial starter culture used in the fermentation of sausages
Abstract Probiotic starter culture does not only improve the safety and shelf-life of products but also extends health benefits to the consumer. This study investigated the probiotic potential of a commercial starter culture used in the fermentation of meat sausages. The starter culture tested, composed of Lactobacillus sakei, Staphylococcus xylosus, and Sta

4. Complementary Performance of Organoselenides and Organotellurides as Antimicrobials Agents
Fungi and bacteria are well-known pathogens for plants, fruits, and animals, including humans. In this context, the prospection of antimicrobial agents is crucial to provide new alternatives for the treatment of microbial diseases. Hence, selenium- and tellurium-containing compounds are underexploited and herein, antimicrobial activity of several organochalc

5. Clinical utilization of bacteriophages: a new perspective to combat the antimicrobial resistance in Brazil
ABSTRACT Due to the emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria, and the evident limitation in therapeutic options, alternatives to combat bacterial infections have been sought. One of these is phage therapy, which is the use of bacterial viruses to kill pathogenic bacteria responsible for the infection. These viruses called bacteriophages are very abundant o

6. A broad-spectrum beta-lactam-sparing stewardship program in a middle-income country public hospital: antibiotic use and expenditure outcomes and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles
ABSTRACT Background: Antimicrobial stewardship programs are an efficient way to reduce inappropriate use of antimicrobials and costs; however, supporting data are scarce in middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate antibiotic use, bacterial susceptibility profiles, and the economic impact following implementation of a broad-spectrum bet

7. Joint report of SBI (Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases), FEBRASGO (Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations), SBU (Brazilian Society of Urology) and SBPC/ML (Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine): recommendations for the clinical management of lower urinary tract infections in pregnant and non-pregnant women
ABSTRACT Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common condition in women. There is an increased concern on reduction of bacterial susceptibility resulting from wrongly prescribing antimicrobials. This paper summarizes the recommendations of four Brazilian medical societies (SBI - Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases, FEBRASGO - Brazilian Federation of Gynec

8. A survey of parabens in commercial baby wipes from Brazil and estimation of daily exposure
Several studies have shown endocrine-disrupting effects of parabens. Parabens are a group of antimicrobials used as preservatives in a wide variety of products, mainly in personal care products. However, little information is available regarding the occurrence of parabens in baby products. In this study, the concentrations of five commonly used parabens, met

10. Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase Production and Biofilm Formation in Salmonella Serovars Resistant to Antimicrobial Agents
ABSTRACT Antimicrobial resistance is a serious public health problem and Salmonella spp. is highly resistant to antimicrobial agents. Biofilms are important in the food industry due to their formation on products, utensils, and surfaces and the difficulty in their removal. The objective of this study was to assess extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) prod

11. Oral Administration of Citrus Extracts in Suckling Piglets
Abstract An experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of suckling piglets subjected to oral administration of citrus extracts (CE). Twenty sows were used with ten sucking piglets on average initial weight of 1.26 kg (± 0.32) for 21 days. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with two treatments: Negative Control (without
