RESUMO

This work has the objective of study the process of construction of the alcoholism like a social disease. between the decades of 1830 and 1920, utilizing a serial of thesis of the Rio de Janeiro Medicine Faculty about the theme. describing one panel of the therapeutical traditional use of the alcoholics in the ocidental societies, approaching the most important theories and the modifications happened on the medicine. We will be analyse still, the entailment established by the medicine between the alcoholism and the social problems of the industrial society, recovering elements like the relations between the woman, the family and the social misery of the popular classes, or the ruptures and the continuities of the customs and traditions when the capitalist working process was implanted.
