RESUMO

The theoretical part of this work deals with parameters that, direct or indirectly, are related with the design of microwave amplifiers. The study considered the S-parameters for 2-port devices (and their stability criteria) and also the noise characterization, since the main objective of this work was the minimization of noise in microwave amplifiers. Later, a comparison is made between noise minimization and gain maximization to obtain some insight in the compromise involved in the design stage. In the experimental part of the work, three amplifiers prototypes were implemented. The first prototype used only distributed parameters in a microstrip structure and was aimed to test our technology with alumina substrates. The second prototype was a test with a microstrip amplifier using lumped elements at microwave frequencies. After these initial tests, a low-noise pre-amplifier was designed, implemented and tested, and may be used in the WEFAX-INPE down-converter equipment for the METEOSAT satellite signal reception, that deals with meteorological data. The tests with this last prototype gave good results
