RESUMO

The aim of this investigation was to examine the oral conditions in childhood cancer long-term survivors, characterize the sample, comparing the prevalence of dental anomalies in the case studies with the control group. Possible correlations between the type and duration of the antineoplastic treatment as well as the patients age during the treatment and the presence of dental abnormalities in permanent teeth were analyzed. In a case-control study, 43 patients ranging 8 to 20 years of age, who undergone cancer related chemio and/or radiotherapy from 0 to 7 years of age were included. Control group was comprised of 129 children matching the case groups age, gender and family income. The patients were assessed both clinically and radiographically. Prevalence analysis of developmental defects of enamel was recorded according to the DDE index and dental development was diagnosed by panoramic x-ray, based on Dahllofs classification. A significant higher prevalence was found for developmental defects of enamel, hypoplasia, microdontia, short root, V-shaped root, late tooth eruption and agenesis in the case group. Radiotherapy, specially in doses below 30 Gy, had the strongest influence in the frequency dental abnormalities. On the other hand neither the patients age nor the length of the treatment showed any influence on the appearance of such conditions. Antineoplastic therapy in children up to 7 years of age has been shown to increase the prevalence of dental abnormalities in the studied sample.
