RESUMO

In this work, a phase change thermal storage system of the shell and tube type is modelled. The phase change material is located in the shell and the heat transfer fluid is circulating in the tubes by forced convection. The system is solved using numerical and semi-analytical models. The numerical model consists of solving the momentum and energy equations using the control volume method The obtained velocity field is substituted in the energy equation of the HTF. To solve the problem as one domain, the energy equation of the working fluid is coupled with the energy equations of the tube wall and the phase change material. In the case of the semianalytical model, instead of solving the momentum equations, the parabolic velocity profile of a fully developed flow is used. The models are used to analyse and predict the thermal performance of two phase change thermal storage systems, one for moderate temperature application and the other is of low temperature applications
