RESUMO

The aim of this research was to analyze the contribution the visitors profiles make in the process of planning the public use of the Protected Areas (PAs). The following study is characterized as being an applied research which made use of qualitative analysis in the treatment of the data gathered. The reasoning made in this research was of the inductive kind and departed from a case study conducted at the Parque Municipal da Lagoa do Peri - PMLP, Florianópolis Santa Catarina. The data collection took place through the application of 292 interviews conferring the results a sampling error of 5,7% and a significance level of 90%. The data were collected though the application of the Questionnaire Catalogue QCat, an Instrument of Data Collection for Research with Park Visitors elaborated by Ken Hornback and Bill Key which so far had been used solely in NPAs of North American countries. The research objectives were consisted of the adaptation and testing of the instrument which contributed to the definition of a data collection instrument which in the future may be used as a model in several PAs in the country. Initially, the analysis of the data collected allowed the definition of the profile of the three groups of individuals which frequent the PMLP and, from these data, it was possible to analyze the importance of having access to these pieces of information once they allow the prediction of how the increment of the public use of the PAs is going to occur; they lend support for the action that determines the formulation of the objectives of the process of planning the public use of the PAs and, finally, allow that actions be developed aiming at increasing the satisfaction of the users and eliminating, as much as possible, the problems caused by their visitation.
