RESUMO

The lacrimal recess is an anterior expansion of the maxillary sinus that can be closely related to the nasolacrimal duct (NLD). The presence of this recess implies a higher surgical risk during dacriocystorhinostomies and middle meatotomies. This study aimed to observe the frequency of the lacrimal recess on computed tomography of paranasal sinuses (CT PNS) and cadaverian hemi- heads and to observe the association of gender and ethnicity with the frequency of a lacrimal recess on CT PNS. The author purposed a new classificatory method to distinguish the maxillary sinus into anterior (ANT) or lateral (LA T) type. Thirty-seven patients were evaluated and 31 cadaverian hemi-heads were dissected. The prevalence of lacrimal recess was assessed on CT PNS and cadavers. Any association between gender and ethnicity with the type of maxillary sinus and the side studied on CT PNS was verified using chi-square test or Fisher s exact test at a levei of significance of 0,05. The Kappa Coefficient (K) was used to evaluate the reproducibility of the classificatory method. Twenty-one (30,9%) lacrimal recesses were observed on CT PNS. The white (26,5%) and male individuais (26,5%) composed the majority of the studied population. There were 13 (41,9%) lacrimal recesses in cadavers and there was no significant statistical difference between the numbers lacrimal recesses presented by both evaluated sides. No association with gender or ethnicity was studied on cadavers, because only parts of non-cataloged hemi-heads were used. Additional studies with a larger number of cases would possibly reinforce the noted prevalence of the lacrimal recess found in this study, guiding the surgeon to carefully approach this high-risk area
