RESUMO

The present work ment to validate traditional knowledge about Aroeira (Schinus therebenthifolium Raddi, Anacardiaceae). The evaluation between efficacy and safety of the crude extract and its terpenoid and tannic fractions was based on ANVISA Resolution RDC n 17/200 on phytotherapics. The fractions were made from bark of stems to establish a pharmacognostic, profile (outline), in order to identify the raw material. Thus, polyphenols such as condensed proanthocyanidins, leucoanthocyanidinas, luteolin and galic acid, stand out, besides cyperone and aristolone, which were not known as present on Aroeira and were characterized by gas chromatography and mass spectometry. Anti-inflammatory and anti-microbian pharmacologic activity have been traditionally attributed to cyperone and aristolone, aside to the mentioned terpenoid. Toxic effects or deaths were not observed in rats at all v.o. dosis from 0,5g till 2 g/kg body weight during 72 h. On the studies of the anti-ulcerogenic action in rats, induced either by ethanol or indometacin, the crude extract and its terpenoid fraction protected gastric mucosal by reducind in the ulcer score relative to control (p<0,05). Cromatographic fractions with anti-microbian activity were defined comparing the crude extract and its terpenoid and tannic fractions to tetracycline, the pattern antibiotic over S. aureus multiresistent cepas and Enterobacteriaceae such as Salmonella and Escherichia. The crude extract and its terpenoid and tannic fractions presented anti-microbian activity that, sometimes, exceeds that of tetracycline
