RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to clinically detect the trauma from instrumentation caused by scaling and root planing with manual and ultrasonic instruments. Twelve patients, 33 to 65 years old, presenting moderate chronic periodontitis and 3.5 to 6.5 mm periodontal pockets (at least, 3 sites) on anterior (maxillary and/or mandibular) teeth were selected for the study. The teeth were ramdomly assigned to one of the following groups: CC group - instrumented by conventional Gracey curettes and US group - instrumented with ultrasonic device. The selected teeth were probed by a computerized electronic probe on plastic stents and were then submitted to scaling and root planing. Immediately after scaling and root planing, the teeth were probed again. The difference between relative attachment levei (RAL) before and after instrumentation was considered the trauma from instrumentation. The intra-group analysis showed statistically significant differences between RAL before and after instrumentation for both groups (0.78 :f: 0.51 for US group; e 0.73 :f: 0.41 for CC group - p.<0.0001). H oweve r, inter-group analysis revealed no statistically significant differences between the trauma from instrumentation caused by the different instruments. Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that root instrumentation, regardless of the instruments used, results in a mean trauma from instrumentation of 0.75 mm. None of the instruments used presented advantages regarding the trauma produced on the bottom of the periodontal pocket
