RESUMO
Considering the narrow arsenal of antifungal drugs, along with the occurrence of resistance phenomenon in fungi, plant derivatives should be evaluated for their antifungal potential. Based on this, this work initially screened extracts of the plants Baccharis ligustrina, Baccharis schultzii, Croton jacobinensis, Licania rigida, Moringa oleifera, Vernonia sp., Vernonia brasiliana, even as the essencial oils Lippia alba (Chemotypes 1, 2, 3 and 4) and Ocimum gratissimum. Initially, a qualitative evaluation of these products was performed through agar diffusion against strains of Candida albicans and Microsporum canis. In this screening, only M. oleifera (MLF-C) and Vernonia sp. (TVS-H) extracts presented antifungal activity against C. albicans and M. canis, with inhibition halo ≥ 10 mm. The other tested products did not present satisfactory antifungal activity (inhibition halo ≥ 10 mm for both fungal species). In the subsequent experiments, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and acute toxicity of MLF-C and TVS-H were determined by CLSI protocols and using assay of Artemia salina, respectively. The determination of MICs was performed against 12 strains of C. albicans and M. canis, through broth microdilution method, as standardized by CLSI (M27-A2 and M38-A). Additionally, acute toxicity assays of these extracts against Artemia salina were performed and the lethal concentration (LC50) was determined. MIC 80% for TVS-H and MLF-C against C. albicans varied from 0.156 to 2.5 mg/mL, while against M. canis it was from 0.039 to 0.625 and 0.039 to 1.25 mg/mL, respectively. The MIC 100% for TVS-H and MLF-C against C. albicans varied from 0.625 to 2.5 mg/mL, while against M. canis it was from 0,078 a 1,25 e 0,039 a 2,5 mg/mL, respectively. Lethal Dose (LD50) for MLF-C and TVS-H were 201.09 and 204.17 mg/mL, respectively. It can be concluded that M. oilifera and Vernonia sp. extracts presented antifungal activity against strains of C. albicans and M. canis, thus, providing perspectives for further studies to characterize their bioactive components.
