RESUMO

The function of the several traffic signal subsystems is defined, among others, by the color of traffic signs and symbols. Therefore, knowing the needs and problems congenital color-blind drivers face can help increase road users safety as it may lead to the adoption of measures to reduce potential communication barriers on traffic rules to such drivers. Within this context, this study aims at identifying color-blind drivers restraints concerning the identification of road sign colors, regarding several materials used for horizontal, vertical and light signs under different light conditions. Thirty-two (32) congenital color-blind drivers with experience over Distrito Federal roads were evaluated. These drivers suffered from Protan and Deutan disorder. They took two color evaluation tests (Ishihara and TNC), a structured interview and tests on horizontal, vertical and traffic light signaling. The latter was conduced under two environmental light conditions: day and night. Results attest the difficulty color-blind drivers have for recognizing colors when it regards road sign colors, which varies according to the disorder level and type. Materials analyzed for horizontal signaling presented no significant difference concerning color perception by color-blind drivers. Among the three types of covers for vertical signaling analyzed, types III and X promoted easier recognition of colors in daytime. Regarding traffic light signaling, Deutan drivers faced more problems recognizing colors from LED light focus than from filament light bulbs, both in daytime and at night. The survey results, therefore, show that it is possible to make traffic signs more accessible for color-blind drivers without spoiling the quality of information for other drivers and pedestrians.
