RESUMO
In this study, the behavior of about 550 children first graders in the Elementary Public Schools of the Municipality of Paulínia, State of São Paulo, was studied in relation to the School Lunch Program. The research was designed to obtain some answers with respect to the school lunch, as an influencing factor, and its interaction with other factor, which the child already bring to school, such as readiness levels, age, socio-economic level, etc. Furthermore, the effect of offerine the school lunch twice each day, to increase the caloric-protein value, on the school achievement and the preference of the children for sweet or salted lunch were determined. The results demonstrated that Readiness Levels is the principal factor that determines school achievement. With respect to the school lunch, that which has higher protein-caloric value produces the best effect on school achievement. The preference of children for sweet lunch was also observed.
