RESUMO

Every health system has two main goals The first one is to optimise the health of the population through the use of the most advanced knowledge about the etiology and management of diseases and enhancement of health The second goal is to decrease the disparity between sub-groups of the population in such a way that none of the groups be in disadvantage with regard to access to health services and achievement of higher health levels The Lubliana Letter (1996) proposes that the health attention systems should be run by values of human dignity equity solidarity professional ethics and that services should be driven to the protection and promotion of life It highlights that individuals should take on responsibilities about their own health and that services should be directed to primary attention Scientific evidences show that countries with a strong base in primary attention in their health care systems achieve better results at lower costs Intestinal parasitoses are public health problems sensitive to changes The study of health conditions of children at school age is highly relevant due to its magnitude the harmful effects of parasitoses and their easy spreading The present study shows the prevalence of intestinal parasitoses (giardiasis and helminthiasis) in 3-12 years-old children in microareas of the Saúde da Família teams in Campo Belo State of Minas Gerais Brazil Four hundred and fifty-nine questionnaires with socioeconomic and environmental data were evaluated and 459 fecal samples were examined by the spontaneous sedimentation method In all the microareas, the highest prevalence was of giardiasis followed by Entamoeba coli and E Histolytica ascariasis ancylostomiasis and trichuriasis The occurrence of risk factors was evalueted in the families of this research, in order to determine the environmental behavioral social and cultural characteristics that influence the health conditions of the individuals as well as the companionship with pets and access to health care services
