RESUMO

Modern horse reproduction, in most breeds, in based on the use of artificial insemination (AI). The wide-spread use of AI has accelerated genetic progress by making selected stallion available to breeders outside the country or region where the stallion is located. When transport of semen from the collection centre to the place where the mare is to be inseminated can be organized within approximately 24 hours, cooled semen, in most cases, is preferred to frozen semen because of its better fertilizing capacity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the viability of the extender to equine semen based on powder coconut water (PCW-105) on the cooling semen at 5C. Were used 25 ejaculates from 05 stallions from arab, mangalarga marchador and campolina breeds, with proved fertility, with ages between 36 and 120 months. Semen was evaluated fresh for volume, concentration, total motility and vigor and respect to the last two, after dilution, on PCW-105 and Equimix (based on skim milk and glucose) at the conservation times of 2, 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours. There wasnt statistical differences in total motility (p<0.05) till 36 hours of conservation. After 48 hours, total motility decreased to less than 10%. 14 mares were inseminated with semen conserved in extender PCW-105 by 24 and 36 hours, with pregnancy rates of 57,1% and 35.7%, respectively, showing that is a satisfactory biotechnological alternative to the refrigeration of equine semen.
