Avaliação motora para a pessoa deficiente mental nas APAEs da região de Campinas-SP : um estudo de caso

RESUMO

The present study examined the models used by Adaptated Physical Education professionals for the evaluation of mentally handicapped people at the Associations of Parents and Friends of Exceptionals (APAEs) located in the region of Campinas - SP and also verified whether Physical Education was taken into consideration in mentally handicapped care programs. The information obtained through semi-structured interviews brought subsidies for a reflection concerning the issue and pointed out that the evaluations carried out by Adaptated Physical Education professionals at the APAEs located in the region of Campinas, with some exceptions, are made through informal, non-judicious and non-systematic observation, and the data obtained by means of those observations are not used by the professionals to elaborate an educational program suitable to that clientele. It was observed that the Physical Education professionals of those institutions lack a more consistent theoretical background in this area, which would give them support and confidence to work with the handicapped, as well as undergo a self-evaluation which would point out their professional weak spots and limitations regarding the procedures used. We were also able to confirm the need for the Physical Education colleges to contemplate in their curricula disciplines that deal with issues related to the handicapped. The majority of the subjects interviewed suggested that more courses in the area of Adaptated Physical Education should be available for ali of the professionals interested in improvement. In this work, according to the concept of mental handicap adopted by the American Association on Mental Retardation (A.A.M.R.) in Luckasson et aI/H (1992), on adaptive behavior, we propose a form of evaluation, based in that behavior, which may serve as a pathway for future investigations carried out by Adaptated Physical Education professionals
