RESUMO

The atomizers of a petrochemical fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCC) have a main role of atomizing the gas-oil at the base of the catalytic reactor (riser). Until the beginning of the decade of 1990 the atomizers used in the units of PETROBRAS suffered pronounced erosion, that causes deficiencies which affects adversely the whole process yield. The conventional methods of analysis provide only a global picture of the equipment, 50 that is not possible to evaluate the equipment efficiency locally, mainly inside of the equipment. Modeling the equipment point the point, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), even assuming strong simplifications, through a two dimensional model along with experimental analysis, it is possible to propose a mechanism for the initial process of erosion, the contours of speed, pressure and temperature are also obtained. The fluid dynamics software CFX-4.3 from AEA Technology Inc. was used to obtain the numerical data of the mode
