RESUMO

This study deal with reproductive biology of two sympatric wood species of the genus Kielmeyera (Guttiferae), K. coriacea and K.speciosa. Pollination, dispersal and establishment of seedlings were studied to characterize the reproductive process and its adaptation to Cerrado vegetation conditions. The study was conducted from march, 1984 to January, 1985 in Águas Emendadas Biological Reserve( 15GRAUS 35 S and 47GRAUS 42 W) near Brasíla - DF, Brasil. The two species flower asynchronously in the area, K. coriacea flowers in the early rainy season (october to december) and K. speciosa in the late rainy season (march to may). Both species have as estensive flowering period lasting up to four weeks. The number of flowers opening in one three per day, can be counted in the tens. In both species the flowers are structurally similar. They are promiscuous dish-flowers with unprotected pollen, presented in the middle of the flowers. They are pollen-flowers, without nectar production, and the only reward for the visitors is the pollen. Within this class of flower, Kielmeyera is itermediate between primitive cantharophilous flowers and the evolved melitophilous flowers with poricidal anthers. Both species show a xenogamous reproductive system. Strong barriers to reproduction between the varieties of K. coriacea were not observed in the study area. The large flowers of Kilmeyera species attract a great diversity of visitors, but the plant are effectivell pollinated only by large bees (over 12 mm body length) ...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
