RESUMO
Experiments were made to determine the I x V characteristic and the thermal conversion efficiency of a 30 kW plasma torch at the Plasma Laboratory at Unicamp. Zhukov s scaling law (V ~ I-0.3) for a low mass flow of the gas and also the scaling law for the efficiency were both confirmed. For a high mass flow the scaling law is still V ~ I-a , but now with a ¹ 0.3. Solution of the Elenbaas-Heller equation for operation with air indicates the temperatures at the axis between 11.500 K and 13.500 K. This torch was used satisfactorily to pre-heat a small foundry ladle and also to generate a nitrogen atmosphere for the sinterization of ferrite?s
