RESUMO

A methodology for the determination of the best potential fishing zones, for sardine, in a Brazil coastal area, between the latitudes of 21°45 S and 25°00 S and the longitudes of 40°50 W and 47°00 W is here presented. By using this methodology, a fishing chart model is developed with surface monthly averaged data of temperature, salinity, oxygen and phosphate contents associated with sardine catches during the months of July, August, September, November and December. Fishing charts containing these fishing zones, are also presented for the five months mentioned. It is also demonstrated the potentiality of the VHRR-IV images of NOAA s satellites, as a help in the determination of the fishing zones. Correlations between oceanographic parameters and sardine catches are also presented, by utilizing programs written for the Burrough-6700 Computer of the Institute for Space Research (INPE).
