Consideraciones sobre la produccion de frutas en Venezuela

RESUMO
The present review provides information about area, production and yield of fruit crops in Venezuela. Also it shows some considerations about production systems, and highlighting limitations, advances and suggestions. The fruit crops in Venezuela are the 3rd. place in the agricultural sector. There are 167,691 Ha with a production of 2,232,088 MT. The main fruit crops are: plantain, banana, orange, and pineapple. The production areas range from arid lowlands, where grapes and pineapples are obtained, and humid highlands where there are peaches and strawberries. There has been reduction in the fruit crops area, with the exception of papaya, pineapple, and avocado. Horticultural management on fruit orchards is heterogeneous, and it is possible found since low to high technology. Low productivity and poor quality is associated to the incorrect application of horticultural practices. The post-harvest system could be improved through the development and implementation of standards of selection, packing, packaging and cold refrigeration. Venezuelan exports of fruits has declined in recent years and focuses on mango, orange and Tahiti lime. The main destinations are: Colombia, Europe, North America and the Caribbean islands. Only the orange is important process fruit in Venezuela. The outlook for the Venezuelan fruits production is to continue as an activity for the domestic market, without a better participation in the international fruit market.
