RESUMO

Geological and geophysical studies were accomplished in the areas of Carnaubeira da Penha and Alagoinha in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco where Neo and Mesoproterozoic crystalline rocks occur. The study aimed at a better understanding of the variables upon which well yields are dependent in hard rock territories, in order to improve well site selection techniques and to raise, therefore, the success ratio of these techniques. Several electromagnetic (VLF), resistivity and geothermal profiles were done as general reconnaissance and also as detail work, whose interpretation has relied on data obtained from photo geology, field geology and variogram analysis. The results strongly suggest that the variables as well as its significances, upon which well yields are dependent in hard rock territories, vary widely from place to place, and that successful well site selection demands, thus, detailed geological characterization of the target area. The results also suggest that general geophysical reconnaissance is insufficient to assure significant probabilities of successful well site selection, even when this reconnaissance indicates favorable areas for groundwater storage. It is thus thought that detailed geophysical profiling must be performed in these areas, in order to obtain the required amount of information
