RESUMO

The Colégio de Aplicação from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Federal University of Santa Catarina state) was created in the beginning of the 1960‟s, as Ginásio de Aplicação, following a model of institution that had been planned and carried out in other universities in Brazil with the same goal: offering the teachers and degree course students a field of internship and pedagogical experimentation. However, since the moment the school was founded, the social profile of its students started to change gradually, partially due to the school selection exam made with the students to get in the institution. The poor students and the ones from the city‟s public orphanage, who were the majority within the school‟s population, were being substituted by students from the middle class, who, not rarely, came from the private schools, which were made for the elite of the city. This process started to become more visible from 1966 on, when a new management team, influenced by the educational philosophy of the New School, took the control of the institution. These influences were admitted by the school itself in 1970, when the secondary school was founded. In order to observe the result of this change on the school population, the first secondary school classes formed by Colégio de Aplicação until the extinction of the school selection exam, ocurred in 1973, were circumscribed by the present research. The students of these classes were investigated by means of interviews and questionaries with the aim of defining their professional and social profiles; so, the present study dialogues with concepts created by theorists of the sociology of education, specifically, Pierre Bourdieu‟s concepts of social and cultural capital and the ideas of the French historian Dominique Julia on school culture. The research was based on the thoughts of these French thinkers separately, first interpreting the school culture as a theoretical instrument to describe the assimilated culture as well as the culture produced by the school, and second, the social and cultural capital in the definition of the social and professional profile of the students and their families. With this, the present study intends to show that the school has a proper culture, but this culture is not fully built within its walls and nor its imposed in an unilateral way on society, because the students bring with them a culture of their social environment external to the institution which can not be ignored. So, this research understands that there was in Colégio de Aplicação na interdependence between a teaching institution that owned a school culture based on the avant-garde and on the pedagogical experimentation and a student with an appropriate cultural and social capital to the survival of this model
