RESUMO
In the present work the laser c1adding process was used to produce WC-Co composite coatings with varied fractions of WC. The AISI 1045 steel was used as substrate. The coatings were produced afier severa! tests, which have permitted the determination of optimum operational parameters. The characterization ofthe coatings was performed by optic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Vickers microhardness. Micro-scale abrasive wear tests, type ball cratering were developed to analyze the behavior ofthe coatings. To examine the corrosion behavior a series of electrochemical tests were performed. The coatings presented a heterogeneous microstructure and neither cracks nor porosity have been observed. WC and Co3W3C carbides distributed on the cobalt rich matrlx essentially form the structure of the coatings. The Co3W3C carbide results from the dissolution of the WC carbide. The coating that presented better abrasive wear resistance was that produced with the mixture of 20% WC + 80%Co (in weight). The 40%WC + 60%Co (in weight) coating composition presented the best result in term of corrosion resistance
