RESUMO
On the Performance of Strategic Alliances: Analysis of Models and Constructs evaluates models and constructs for the analysis of the performance of Strategic Alliances (SAs) based on a research with 42 companies. It evaluates the use of measurements as the General Satisfaction, the completion of Strategic Goals, and the existence of Net Spillover Effects as performance indicators for a SA, as well as the use of operational measurements as longevity, the number of contractual changes, survival, balance between the allies (equilibrium), compatibility, dependency and adaptability. This work also tests three types of models. The first is based on a previous work by Ariño (2003) with two samples of Spanish companies and uses a single performance construct; the second uses a MIMC (Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes) model, also with a single performance construct; and the third, named Complete model, has three different constructs (operational performance, general performance and completion of strategic goals). Among the main achievements, the number of contractual changes showed a very low relationship with alliance performance, and there are evidences that equilibrium and adaptability are key factors in the performance of SAs. The other variables have moderate effects but are still important in analyzing the performance of SAs. Regarding the three models tested, the original model proposed by Ariño was improved with two transformations of variables, and good results were also found with the MIMC model, specially due to the inclusion of new variables when compared to Ariño´s model. The Complete model also had good results, although it had smaller goodness-of-fit indexes, supporting some theories in which the performance of SAs is comprised of two factors: an operational one and an organizational one.
