RESUMO

The present work describes the development of a procedure for obtaining Co and Co - "carrier-free" - from nickel targets irradiated in a cyclotron and in a nuclear reactor, respectively. The irradiated nickel target is stirred in a flask containing concentrated HCl at reflux until complete dissolution of the target. After complete elimination of the solvent by evaporation, the metal chloride crystals obtained are dissolved in 6 M HCl. The tarqet is now in a convenient form to be chromatographed. The separation of the radiocobalt from its contaminants is done in a glass colunm containing anion exchange resin. The eluents consist of HCl in various concentrations. The "carrier free" radiocobalt is eluted with 4 M HCl. The procedure described in this work shows the advantage, when compared with literatura procedures, of using small amounts of both resin and eluent, resulting in the minimization of impurities from these sources the separation procedure. Another notable advantage of this procedure is that it permits the elimination of contaminants arising from impurities in the nickel used as target (such as copper, iron and zlnc),as well as radioactive impurities formed by secondary nuclear reactions of these species (such as Fe and Zn).
