RESUMO

Two preparative methods for quantification of metals in honey using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP OES) were developed: microwave assisted digestion (MW) and ultra-sound assisted dissolution (US). Aspects such as matrix complexity, instrumental optimization and the essentiality/toxicity of the species K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb, Cd were considered. Using the US method, 69 samples of Brazifian honey, from different parts of the country, were analysed. The resufts were treated by the chemometrics methods of hierarchical analysis and principal components. The proposed methods were shown to be efficient, with recoveries between 90 and 110% and relative standard deviations lower than 10%. They presented differences attributed to the characteristics of the two preparative procedures. Statistical tests, F and t, showed agreement between them. While MW was more precise than US, this second method was simpler, requiring Iess manipulation and Iess sample. The choice between them will depend on the precision required by the analysis. The results obtained indicated that the level of Pb and Cd in Brazilian honeys was below of limit of quantification and also that about 80% of them may be considered as a good source of Mn. The concentrations of K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe and Zn varied over a large scale. It was impossible to classify the origin of the honey from different regions of the country by the chemometric evaluation used in this study. However, it was possible to predict a tendency. The results obtained provide important information about the mineral content of Brazilian honeys.
