RESUMO

Firstly it was done a general review of the existing theories about the eutectic transformation, correlating the eutectic structure characteristics with the solidification parameters that make possible the control of the final structure, particularly the velocity of solidification and the thermal gradient in the liquid. After that, these parameters were experimentally determinate, being the solidification done in an unidirectional ascendant way in a water cooled metal/mold system, using the Sn-Pb eutectic as the standard material. It was done the following experimental verifications: (a) the influence of coatings applied at the metal/mold interface upon the kinetics of solidification; (b) measurement of the heat transfer coefficient of the metal/mold interface for different conditions of thermal contact; (c) solidification with the eutectic superheated in order to determine the behaviour of the thermal gradient in the liquid for the different conditions of thermal contact at the metal/mold, interface; (d) the influence of the solidification process operational parameters on the resulting structure. Finally, it vias verified the applicability of the parabolic unidirectional model for the determination of the solidification time of ingots, in the particular case of the Sn-Pb eutectic
