RESUMO

Nanomaterials, due to its unique physical properties, are promising agents for biomedical use. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) covered with double layer of lauric acid (LA-MNP) were tested had their cytotoxicity evaluated in vitro mesangial cells (CHMI), fibroblasts (FHN) and peritoneal macrophages, showing decrease in cell viability only in macrophages, when treated with high doses of LA-MNP. In vivo tests showed the presence of MNP in spleen, lungs and liver of male mice swiss undergoing intravenous injections of LA-MNP, all in magnetic resonance and microscopy analyses. No morphological changes were noted in organs . Analysis by light and transmission electron microscopy show a large accumulation of MNP in lung of animals in early times (5 to 30 minutes), while spleen and liver showed high concentrations only in later times (1 day and 1 month). The micronucleus test of a young red blood cells collected from bone marrow shows that LA-MNP are not genotoxic, but showed mild citotoxicity. Animals undergoing experimental magnetic attraction with a external field show LA-MNP in the brain tissue, without causing changes in organs. The FM containing LA-MNP showing a promising material for use in biomedical applications, since it has low toxicity to cells and tissues, lack of genotoxicity, and ability to suffer magnetic attraction by an external field.
