RESUMO

The present study concerns the action of NaCl and mannitol on the process of germination an Rnase activity, in seeds of cowpea ( vignea unguiculata L. Walp) cv pitiúba, with special attention to the effect of salt on RNase isoenzymes. An investigation was also carried out to explain whether the increase in Rnase activity during germination was due to de novo protein synthesis or enzyme activation. The effect of salt and mannitol on the process of germination was evaluated through fresh and dry weight measurements of the cotyledons, roots and aerial parts, of seedlings qrown in water (control) and iso-osmotic solutions (-4.6 bar) of NaCl (salt treatment) and mannitol (osmotic treatment). The results suggest that the presence of salt or mannitol during germination inhibits the mobilizations and/or transport of the cotyledodonary reserves to other parts of the seedlings, resulting in a reduction of growth. The effect of NaCl and mannitol was studied on the activity of Rnase in cotyledon
