RESUMO

Purpose: To compare the effects of treadmill running (Tre) and resistance exercises (Res) on post-exercise hypotension (PEH) and to verify if PEH may be sustained during the work day of the employees of Presidency of the Republic of Brazil. Methods: Fifteen borderline hypertensive and physically active volunteers (42.9Â6.2 yrs; 81.4Â15.4 kg; 172.7Â9.2 cm; 26.8Â3.7 kg/m2 and resting mean blood pressure of 90.0Â9.6 mmHg) underwent, in separate days, to four experimental exercise sessions: 1) one maximum repetition (1-MR) test for strength assessment; 2) 20-min of Tre (20Tre); 3) 20-min of Res (20Res); 4) control session (Con). The 20Tre sessions were performed at 70% of Heart Rate reserve (HRres) and the 20Res sessions were performed in a circuit model, with 20 repetitions of 40% 1-MR for upper and lower body. The systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (Microlife, BP 3AC1-1) were measured during 20-min of resting before exercise (Rep), and at each 15-min during one hour of post-exercise recovery (Rec). Additionally, blood pressure and its respective variation deltas in relation to resting (VD) were measured at the 15th, 30th, 45th and 60th min of post-exercise period (Rec15 â 60), after-lunch and at 240 and 420min of recovery at work (240rw and 420rw). Results: PEH was observed after all sessions, with differences being observed on VD of PAS for Con in relation to 20Tre at Rec30, Rec60, after-lunch, 240rw and 420rw (p<0.05), and between Con and 20Res at Rec30, Rec45, Rec60, 240rw and 420rw (p<0.05). Also, the VD of PAD of the Con differed to 20Res at Rec15 and Rec60 (p<0.05) as well as between Con and 20Tre for Rec60 (p<0.05) and between 20Tre and 20Res for Rec15 (p<0.05). In relation to control, the PEH effect was similarly observed during all over the day work of employees after both resistance and treadmill running exercises (p<0.05) with a minimal and maximal lowered effect on mean blood pressure of 2.9Â2.4 and 6.3Â0.8 mmHg after Res at 420rw and Rec45 respectively, and of 3.9Â0.5 and 7.1Â0,5 mmHg after Tre at Rec15 and 240rw respectively. Conclusion: Similarly to treadmill running, a 20-min of Res (circuit) promotes PEH and may be an alternative for the non-pharmacological treatment of borderline hypertensive individuals during the work day.
