RESUMO

This work had as main objective to study Uropathogenic Escherichia coli strains, that represent the most frequent form of extraintestinal infection in mammalian species. Eighteen uropathogenic E. coli strains isolated at the Medical School of Universidade Estadual de Campinas were utilized for comparative studies of genetic characteristics associated to the pathogenecity. The genetic traits comprised expression of fimbriae, intensity of adhesion on uroepithelial cells, production of hemolysins, electrophoretic analysis of surface and outer membrane proteins in SDS/PAGE, presence of plasmids and products of PCR - DNA Fingerprinting (RAPD). Among the obtained strains we could detach: 1) capacity of the majority of strains to adhere to uroepithelial cells; 2) presence of plasmids with different molecular weights in all strains; 3) differences at the expression of virulence factors as fimbriae and hemolisins; 4) similarity of outer membrane proteins in profile SDS/PAGE; 5) classification of the strains in groups according to the electrophoretic profile of surface proteins; and 6) the differenciation of strains through PCR ? DNA - Fingerprinting was not possible
