RESUMO

During the period November 1991 to November 1992, 40 women were selected from the population receiving health care at the Outpatient Clinic of the University Hospital, State University of Campinas, with the aim of studing the clinical applicability of transperineal ultrasonography as an alternative imaging method to uretrocystography in the investigation of female stress urinary incontinence (S.U.I.). The cases were divided in two groups of 20 patients each, according to the presence or not of S.U.I, symptoms, named Group I and Group II {symptomatic and asymptomatic respectively). The group with symptoms received the urodynamic assessment in order to rule out detrusor instability and mixed urinary incontinence. The descent of the urethrovesical junction under straining was measured through urethrocystography and compared with the results obtained through transperineal ultrasonography. A descent equal to or higher than 10mm was considered consistent with poor anatomical support in both methods. Our conclusion was that transperineal ultrasonography can probably replace urethrocystography in the assessment of the urethrovesical junction descent on straining in patients with S.U.I, with the advantages compared to the tests of specificity and positive predictive values
