RESUMO

An electromyographic study was made of the following thumb muscles: the abductor pollicis brevis, and opponens pollicis in 24 young and healthy persons ragend fran 19 to 30 years old, through the use of electrodes of simple oo-axial needles, linked to an electromyograph, mark TECA TE 4 wi th a double channel with the object of studying the synergism between the cited muscles, comparing their respective activities in free movement, counter-resistance, and grasp. The abductor pollicis brevis, presented greater electromyographic activity than the opposing muscle in both free and counter-resistant, as well as grasp and lateral. In the movements of abduction, the two muscles in question revealed inactivity. Both rnuscles showed activity in alI I the types of proposed grasp
