RESUMO

The decline in the incidence of dental caries may be attributed to the idespread use of fluoridated dentifrices. In addition, sodium fluoride has been uggested as the most effective fluoridated compound in dentifrices. Thus, an xperimental dentifrice formulation containing NaF and CaCO3, a Brazilian brasive of good quality, was previously developed and fluoride was maintained oluble. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate in vitro the ptential of this experimental formulation on inhibition of caries lesion initiation and progression in human dental enamel. The anticaries potential of experimental dentifrices with different concentrations of fluoride (275, 550 and 1100 ppm F) was compared with a negative and positive control (Crest@). Human enamel blocks were selected for the study by surface microhardness. Eighty blocks were randomly assigned into the groups and submitted to 7 days of pH cycling, that is, 5 days of alternating demineralization and remineralization plus 2 days in remineralization solution. The treatments with the dentifrice slurries were performed twice a day. After the experimental period, enamel surface microhardness, mineralloss (_Z) and fluoride uptake in enamel were determined. In conclusion, the experimental dentifrice formulation with 1100 ppm F, containing NaF and stabilized CaCO3, was effective as an anticaries agent and was able to interfere with the dynamics of dental caries process in an in vitro pH cycling model. In addition, the results showed an increasing anticaries effectiveness with the increase of fluoride concentration in dentifrices
