RESUMO
This in vivo study evaluated the microbial coronal leakage in dogs endodontically treated teeth, post space preparation and with the remaining filling protected or not with different materiais. A hundred thirty six root canais of incisives and pre-molars of 6 dogs were used. After the anesthesia of the animais, these teeth were endodontically prepared. Hundred two canaIs were filled by lateral condensation technique and Sealapex sealer, and 34 canais were filled only with a single gutta-percha cone without sealer. In 68 canais filled by lateral-condensation and in the 34 canais filled without sealer, the fillings were partially removed leaving standardized 4mm. Directly on the remaining obturations, protections with 2mm of thickness were done with Coltosol or Composite " flow ". The obturations of the other canais were partially removed leaving them with 6mm and didn t receive protection. The canais were divided in 8 groups of 17 .each distributed in the following way: - groups 1 and 5: protection with composite flow; - groups 2 and 6: protection with Coltosol; - groups 3 and 7: protection with coltosol in the roots filled with a single cone without sealer; - groups 4 and 8: without protection. Properly prepared, the specimens stayed with the fillings exposed to the oral cavity of the animais. The groups 1 to 4 were evaluated with 30 days of exposition and the groups 5 to 8 with 180 days. In the end of the experimental times the animais were killed. Ali the specimens were radiographically appraised about the appearance of periapical lesions. In each group, 11 roots destined to the histological evaluation were removed in block and properly processed for histology. The other specimens were extracted and destined to bacterial research by two methods. In 3 roots microbiologic culture was accomplished and the other 3 were transverselly fractured to Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) analysis. Periapicallesion was not radiographically detected in any specimen. In the microbiologic evaluation only one specimen of the group 7 presented bacterial growth. The SEM evaluation did not demonstrate bacterial leakage. Histologically, at 30 days, no -specimen presented inflammation related to coronal leakage. With 6 months the group 5 presented 2 specimens with inflammation related to the coronal leakage, the other groups presented only 1 specimen each with inflammation. The Brown and Br.enn stain evidenced microrganisms in the specimens with inflammation. The r.esults allowed to conclude that Coltosol was efficient in the protection of the obturations and that theroot canal filling presents a good resistance to coronalleakage in vivo up to 180 days
