RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior of adverbial adjuncts concerning long-distance movement, as in: (1) Where did Peter say Mary bought the gift t? Working within a generative approach, I assume Aoun et al s (1987) and Rizzi s (1990) proposal of dividing the adjuncts into two different types: referential adjuncts (where/when) versus non-referential ones (how/why). 1n face of some psycholinguistic tests results, I support this division by the fact that referential adjuncts may undergo lo.ng movement even in weak islands environment (as in factive islands), while non-referential ones may no1. (2) Where did Peter find out that Mary bought a gift t? (3) Why did Peter find out that Mary bought a gift t*? I suggest a model based on Cinque (1990) to account for these facts. Referentiality entails specific chains: binding chains are formed between a referential operator and its variable, while the system must resort to government when referentiality is absent (non-refereritial operator/variable). A further property of such a model is to render Subjacency unnecessary. This approach points to gains the theory may obtain by addressing question (iii) of the generative program - i.e., the use of linguistic knowledge. A glimpse into the benefits parsing analysis may provi de is inevitable - these studies may equip the theory with efficient tools for testing its accuracy and explanatory power, in respect to its role in language processing
