RESUMO

This thesis proposes reflections on the importance of tourism to cultural heritage conservation in the cities comprised in the Middle Itajaí Valley (Blumenau, Gaspar, Indaial, Pomerode, Timbó, Rodeio, Benedito Novo, Doutor Pedrinho and Rio dos Cedros), located in Santa Catarina State. Although there is the fear that tourism may damage local heritage, we call attention to the fact that this very phenomenon may cause a greater concern of the population and government entities about its conservation, since this type of tourist will only exist if culture is preserved; otherwise, cultural tourism will cease to exist. Based on this assumption and on the observation of an economy each time more global, the need of thinking about the relationship among tourism, culture and regional development, identifying and analyzing in which ways cultural heritage may be favored in terms of conservation by means of tourism, arises. This study presents the partial results of a research that aims at identifying and analyzing in which ways tourism may contribute to the conservation of cultural goods, as well as filling a gap in the cultural and tourism planning at the State Office of Regional Development in Blumenau. In terms of methodology, this study is ethnographic and bibliographic, and the procedures employed involve the use of secondary and primary data, which suggest the use of several techniques, such as bibliographic analysis, document analysis, structured interview, both direct and indirect, and unwritten data sources (oral statements). The results obtained show the lack of cooperation among the cities involved, as well as the absence of the community from public policies
