RESUMO

Movements on behalf of the rights of people with special needs have been taking place in various countries, including Brazil, where a number of decrees have been promulgated, aimed at giving these people and their families a more dignified life. The right to health means that everybody, including people with special needs and their families, have access to adequate healthcare and treatment. Despite the advances achieved in humanitarian and technological terms, the families of children with special needs still face a very harsh reality. This study seeks to identify aspects related to resilience, over the course of these families lives. The theoretical framework is based on the concept of resilience, which refers to the familys capacity for regeneration, when faced with hardships. This is an exploratory study, focusing on two families with children with special needs, aged between 2 and 4 years. The data were collected through fortnightly interviews in the home, over a five month period. The information was recorded in a field journal. The reports given by the families were analyzed for signs of resilience. The research process complies with the ethical aspects outlined by Resolution 196/96 (Regulated Guidelines and Norms for Research involving Human Beings) and the ethical board of Univali. The results indicate that illnesses which create the special need leads to a situation of stress continues throughout the history of the family, forcing families to undergo a process of adjustment/maladjustment, and continual adaptation and readaptation. The familys assessment of the seriousness of the situation, the coping patterns they establish, the process of confronting and making decisions, and the resources available in the community, and in the family context, are an essential part of this adaptation process. Signs of resilience in these processes include: sticking together within the family, flexibility and spirituality, among others.
