RESUMO

This thesis investigates the Menino de engenho novel written by José Lins do Rego. The study was draw on the historical-materialist criticism perspective which presupposes the literary work as a representation of Brazil where the historical contradictions through out the country development are stored and internalized aesthetically as literary. The hypothesis that guides this research is focused on the changing position of the novel narrator who, in a movement of rapprochement and distance between that who tells the story and his I-narrated and also between the narrator and the narrative matter, refers to a dialectic movement of the Brazil’s formation marked by historical and social contradictions that characterize the condition of an undeveloped country. In order to check this hypothesis, we considered first the contextualization of the so-called “sugar cane cycle”, where Menino de engenho is the first novel. We attempted to show how the contradictions from the country historical formation are internalized by the writer based on a program which guided the production of the novel in the 1930’s. After that we analyzed the structure of the novel, the narrator formation and how the narrative is developed, highlighting the conflict between the narrator Carlos de Melo and the boy called Carlinhos who lived in the matter that composes the narrative. We investigated the relationship between the character and the narrator from the narrator conception as a representative of that who can not be self-represented, and as a consequence he gives this power to the narrator. As the character represented in the novel is another one in relation to the narrator, the representation is not possible to be done as a whole because it is not free from a class position. Furthermore, we also approached in this chapter, when the literature is turned to itself it sets a space of discursive struggles committed with the explorations of popular classes. Thus, in Menino de engenho, the literature turns to itself in order to question about a way to represent those who can not be self-represented.
