RESUMO

In this thesis, procedure for obtaintion of vector and scalar fields is shown and applied to stirred tank reactors. The methodology of the present work is emphasized through case studies with a Newtonian fluid, water, and a non-Newtonian system, polystyrene. Both fluids are contained inside a stirred tank reactor. The system stirred tank reactors is studied relating to variation of location of disk type impeller (s) inside it, as well as with changes in its dimensions. From this step on, using a computational fluid dynamics package PHOENICS version 2.1, it is verified the influence of geometric variations on vector and scalar fields. Giving emphasis to the interaction of the study of chemical reaction engineering (stirred tank reactors) together with the "cfd" ("computational fluid dynamics") methodology, new methods of resolution of old problems are found. It is concluded that presentation of tridimensional models becomes more understandable and realistic than bidimensional ones. Graphical outputs display, basically, veloci ty profiles, streamlines and surfaces for the proposed case studies. In this way, the computational fluid dynamics approach is considered an interdisciplinary area that fundamentally depends cn advances in scientific computation Moreover, it helps strategically on the resolution of important systems inside chemical engineering. Mixture theory associated with the study of geometric variations of the impeller (inside the stirred tank), as well as interaction of cfd with other areas of knowledge , as: medicine and mechanics are suggested
