RESUMO

The main objective of this work was to describe the morphologic evolution, sedimentary characteristics, and shoreline changes of the Itapocorói Bay, Santa Catarina Brazil, through the comparison of beach profile data and sediment samples taken before (80`s and 90`s) and after the nourishment projects (2007) at Alegre and Piçarras beaches. Aerial photography analysis from different years (decades of 1930, 1950, 1970, 1990 and 2000) were also used. The analysis method was considered satisfactory, because the shoreline change rates obtained by the aerial photographs were validated with the beach profile data. The results show that the beaches have distinct morphologic and sedimentological behavior due to the increase in the wave energy exposition of the shore. The south portion of the bay is more sheltered, and has flat beach profile slopes (between 2 and 3), with a medium grain size of 0,16mm to 0,2mm. The northern part, more exposed, shows steeper slopes (5 to 7) and grain size from 0,22mm to 0,44mm. Nine years after the nourishment project completed at Piçarras beach, a total amount of 50% of the sediment volume was lost, especially at the south end next to the river, where there is a well developed hot spot, which shows rates of volume loss of about 90%. The aerial photography analysis indicated that after the river stabilization and construction of the two jetties at the Piçarras river inlet (70`s), the shoreline presented an increase in the retraction rates, where the hot spot is found today
