RESUMO

This thesis has been doing a study about the evolution of the concept of citizenship since its revival, from middle classes revolutions until nowadays. During this analysis are verified also changes from another concepts which are straightly linked to this category like State, supremacy, public sphere and civil society. From these identifications of changings which are occurring with the citizenship in reason, especially, the transformation of the international scenery and it is not only the States that are acting like actors, but also, transactionals enterprises, economicals blocks, non â governmentals that acts in net etc., it has tried to understand what is the reserved space to the citizenships into the structure of one of these new actors which has appeared, it means, European Union. For this goalâs achievement, has been done a bibliography study of many authors who treat about the citizenship evolution and about the European Union in their social context, as well as the treaties which establish it, and having a special look to the Amsterdam Treaty, although it is the most recent treaty consolidated, since the Nice Treaty, in spite of being later to Amsterdam, it did not produce all of its effects. From this analysis, we can conclude that the new concept of citizenship has been, in some way, introduced in the European Union. However, the warranty of the citizenships rights does not constitute the main objective of it, and it makes clear when it is realized that it was not yet decided the necessaries mechanisms in order that it participates effectively in this integrationist process as a subject and main addressee
