RESUMO

The present research purposed to investigate family resilience in facing paraplegia in two families that have one of their member bearers of paraplegia derived from different causes. In this manner, we studied a family with one member bearer of paraplegia due to medullar lesion, and a family with one member bearer of paraplegia due to cerebral paralysis. The reason behind studying families with family member bearers of paraplegia deriving from different causes is the interest to learn about family resilience through the life cycle. The research used the Case Study method, seeking to bring back the complexity of processes that integrate family resilience, as well as the means of intellectual construction which accompany the research development. The tools employed to gathering a probed analysis of the theme were as follows: semi-structured interviews, carried out based on key-processes of Family Resilience proposed by Froma Walsh (2004); family genogram; eco-map and narratives of life. All the tools highlighted communication as the main knowledge building path, for we understand that communication converts itself into a legitimate and permanent space for information production. The data were submitted to a qualitative analysis from the systemic approach perspective, holding as theoretical referential, the key-processes of Family Resilience (Walsh, 2004) and the Family Life Cycle according to Carter and McGoldrick (2001). The results pointed to the following aspects that work as resilience protector and promoter factors within the individuals ambit: self-confidence, self-determination, optimism and feeling of belonging. As regards family resilience, we found the following aspects: system flexibility; well defined roles and frontiers; open and clear communicational processes mainly amongst the family members; access to a network of social assistance; ability/capacity to extract a positive aspect from adversity; ability/capacity to contextualize stress factors. The results also signaled the existence within the studied families of resilience as a capability which maintained itself present in many moments of their paths, revealing that, even though some situations are deemed more stressing and more difficult to be fought off, the learning experience acquired during other adversity moments work as basis for future actions. The research data suggest a probable existence of a relation between family resilience and individual resilience, fact which would justify further efforts in more research about the theme, aiming at promoting work strategies that would include the families mainly within the rehabilitation context.
