RESUMO

The present work has the purpose to analyse the role of the Canção do Exílio (1843), by Gonçalves Dias (1823 - 1864), as a paradigmatic text of the literary universe of the brazilian 1800 s. As it is known, the poem appeared in a historical context in which the engaged character of our literature was a necessary condition for its own existence. As such, the study of the poem is revealed to be of great importance in helping to construct our national identity, as since its appearance, the poem by Gonçalves Dias has become synonym of the Brazilian spirit. Besides that, this work shows that the idea of nation, legitimated by Romanticism, has to do with a centralizing project of the Brazilian elite. Thus and from the positioning of Gonçalves Dias in the Brazilian literature, it has been attempted to map the problem of the relations of favor underlying the relationship between the writers and the central power. Finally, this work tries to give proof that the Canção do Exílio, in privileging the tropical nature as a metaphor for the national representation, besides placing itself in the traditional project of mythfication of the local nature, by itself ended up building its own tradition in , the Brazilian literature.
