RESUMO

This dissertation is a study of interactive between Japanese descendants and nondescendents. We take as presupposed the existence of a stereotype Japanese descendent being more quiet in an intercultural context, and, as such participating very little in a communicative situation. We intend to ana1yze this stereotype to try to determine the significance and implications of "being more quiet". For the purposes of this study, a class of college leveI Japanese descendents and nondescendents learning Japanese as a foreign language was selected. Four classes were videotaped for the data to be ana1yzed. The ethnographic survey (Erickson, 1984, 1986) was combined with the theoretical scaffolding of social-linguistics (Gumperz). The analysis was organized in two parts: the first one focused on participant structures; the second one pointed out contextual cues. With this theoretical basis, we intend to respond to the following questions: Why are the descendents considered more quiet? How is silence between descendents and non-descendents broken? How are cultural values possibly being manifested in the interaction between descendents and nondescendents? The results of the ana1ysispermit the conclusion that there were distinct forros of communication. The non-descendents usually use verbal cues more, while descendents employ verbal cues intercalated with other types (non-verbal, prosodic and paralinguistic). Nondescendents become more "talkative" because of their facility in creating a situation of "spontaneous conversation" and by the posture of the descendent listeners in these moments. Besides, there are differences between descendents and non-descendents regarding the use of typologies of interrupting silence; for example, differences in the use of paralinguistic clues, principally in relation to the level of the tone of voice
