RESUMO
In this thesis, the analysis of domestic work is based on the practices of women domestic workers. They are one of the largest category of women workers in Brazil. The concepts of sexual division of labor and domestic work are points of reference for the theoretical reflection and the analysis of empirical data. The notion of daily life is part of this reflection and is a methodological path through which the relation between the time of remunerated and non-remunerated work and daily life becomes meaningful. In the case of women domestic workers, the work practices that constitute their workday as workers are specifically constructed in reproductive work, and this poses specific issues for organizing their daily lives. Based on the analysis of the rhythms and the dynamics of remunerated and nonremunerated domestic work practices, my objective was to understand how women inserted in this relation face daily tensions around the use of time and the forms of resistance engendered in response to domination/exploitation of domestic work time. This implied analyzing the relation between tensions in the use of time in domestic work and the construction of the political subject. In addition to bibliographic review and survey of secondary data, field research with unionized and non-unionized women domestic workers in the Metropolitan Recife Region was carried out. This field work utilized techniques of qualitative research. Results unveil the existence of an extensive, intensive, and intermittent workday, generated in the reproductive work sphere, that determines the social organization of time in the daily lives of women domestic workers. They also unveil tensions that are expressed at different levels around the use of time, emerging from the contradictions of these working relations, and the forms of resistance they engender. These forms of resistance are both individual and collective.
