RESUMO

"Casarão da Barragem Santa Lúcia" was built in the nineteenth century. It had been declared as a monument by the Cultural Heritage Council of Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais - Brazil) in 1992. That was considered a single case since it originated from a favela community request. This event becomes emblematic by setting out a new element in the history of relationships between the government and the slums population in the city: after all, what are the senses to monumentalize a build that is symbol of a space historically rejected by society? On this issue, the research discusses the representations on favelas in Belo Horizonte, at different moments, by both the municipal government and the favela residents. The analysis undertaken from administrative documents, interviews and urban and heritage preservation legislation suggest that favelas memory is a fertile ground to building new favela?s social representations, for the right to exist symbolically and effectively in the city.
