RESUMO

The object of this thesis is the thinking of Galician Franciscan D. Alvaro Pais, concerning the Christian royalty and its purpose as a power capable of managing Christians with justice and to purge the Iberian Peninsula from harmful elements of the catholic faith. The historical context refers to the last quarter of the XIII century and first half of the XIV century. The objectives are to describe and analyze the model of behavior proposed by Franciscan D. Alvaro Pais to the iberian kings, based on a franciscan evangelization project. In his work, he denounces sins and vices of the kings and proposes guidelines for spiritual renovation, based on fulfillment of their attributions as governors empowered by God and in practice as christians observing the cardinal virtues. The documented sources for this study were extracted from the writings of D. Alvaro Pais, with emphasis on the Estado e pranto da Igreja and Espelho dos reis. The last one was written between 1340-1344, and dedicated to D. Alfonso XI (1312-1350). In addition, the Castilian regal chronicles from centuries XIII and XIV, legislative documents as Las siete partidas and Ordenamiento de Alcalá de Henares, among others, were also objects of analysis. Canonic documents, with prominence for the Decretais by Pope Gregory IX, were important to identify the thought of the severe Galician Franciscan about men and women of his time, and who would be apt to effectively govern populus christiano in the secular plan, in regards to the purpose of an Alvarian society. Through this study, it was possible to perceive important economic, social, cultural, religious and political aspects of late Middle Ages on the Iberian Peninsula.
