RESUMO

The Brazilian Code [NBR 6118]1: Projeto e Execução de Obras de Concreto Armado where conceming normal strength reinforced concrete columns, which are treated in this investigation, regarding to protection of longitudinal bars against buckling prescribes: "the polygonal stirrups protects against buckling the longitudinal bars placed at the edges and those placed at a distance not greater than 20rpt from the edge, if within this 20rpt length there is no more than two longitudinal bars not included those in the edges; howewer whereas there are more than two bars in this length or beyond it supplementary stirrups will be needed with diameter and spacing equal to those of the polygonal stirrups" (c1ause 6.3.4.3). Considering what the Code prescribes, an interest was raised about the real need of this supplementary stirrups when using on1y one longitudinal bar within those in the edges. This is the subject of this research. The results obtained from the first series of tests was compared with those of an investigation conducted by [AGOSTINI, L.R.S. e FERNANDES, G.B.]8 at Faculdade de Engenharia de Limeira - UNICAMP, during 1987; whose test specimens had the same characteristics of those used in this investigation. In the following series the specimens werw tested with and without supplementary stirrups differing by stirrup spacing and concrete strength, to check the real contribution of this reinforcement regarding to buckling protection of the longitudinal bars
