RESUMO

Slurries containing Portland cement concrete are generated from concrete mixer trucks and other concrete-coated equipment in concrete washout area. This work presents some of the results of an investigation on the possible applications of aggregates from recycled concrete mixer trucks waste (WCA) in concrete. The investigation was carried out using factorial design of experiments coupled with response surface methodology. For the study, the physical and mechanical properties of concrete produced with recycled aggregate were investigated and the results are presented. While experimenting with fresh and hardened concrete, mixtures were prepared using WCA as the replacement of natural fine aggregate at the level 10, 20 and 30 wt.% with water/cement ratios of 0.40, 0.50 and 0.60. The mixtures were cured for periods of 7 and 28 days. Properties of fresh recycled aggregate concrete were evaluated. The analyses of specific mass, and of the consistency index were carried out in the fresh concrete. The properties of hardened recycled aggregate concrete were examined: 7-day and 28-day compressive strength and water absorption were determined. The necessary data for establishing a mix proportion design and a quality control method were collected. Such statistical modeling is discussed against qualitative X-ray diffraction and microstructures of some selected samples, studied using SEM. Empirical equations, surfaces and contour plots for the physical-mechanical properties of fresh and hardened concrete were obtained via regression analysis. The consistency index decreased with the increase in the content of WCA. Specific mass obtained was lower than that of concrete with natural aggregate. A given 28-day compressive strength (32 MPa to 44 MPa) can be achieved at several water/cement ratios and replacement contents, thus producing an economical mixture concrete with recycled aggregate waste and lower natural aggregate content. The results from confirmation experiments validate the prediction from the statistical approach. XRD and SEM analyses results indicate the presence of quartz, calcite, ettringite, portlandite, and silicates in recycled concretes.
